I think that Giorgio De Chirico's squares are multiple visions, both formal and chromatic, that direct the gaze beyond. Statues, windows, obelisks, trains, men, and background landscapes are obstacles to vision, meant to divert the gaze from what isn't there—the essence... imo of courze
