Breaking Free

Breaking Free captures the moment when restraint gives way to release. The figure is a dancer, but the work is less about dance itself than what his movement expresses—the feeling of pushing beyond something that has confined him and discovering freedom on the other side.

Rather than reproduce the reference literally, I allowed the figure to become part of the emotion of the painting. Along the left side, his body begins to suggest the shape of wings, as though movement itself is transforming him. His form seems caught somewhere between the physical and the symbolic: still grounded in the human body, yet already moving beyond its boundaries.

The surrounding textures carry that transformation outward. Weathered, layered marks contrast with the fluidity of the dancer, creating the sense of something old being worn away. The figure does not simply move through the space—he appears to emerge from it.

At its heart, Breaking Free is about that instant when we stop allowing what has held us, defined us, or confined us to determine where we go next. Freedom is not represented as stillness or escape, but as movement: an active decision to push forward, open up, and become something more.

The painting began with the body of a dancer, but ultimately became an image of liberation.
