Artist comment from Ashley C. (Jungle Eye): I grew up within the confines of a patriarchal religion - Christianity. The role of the feminine was always downplayed and never shown as much importance as it should have. Seeing how powerful women can be, how much they can take on, and more so, learning about how the church and other institutions silenced and tried to cull the power of the feminine, it moved me to create the work and initially title it ‘Heretic’ - she who speaks out and goes against the current and the status quo. The roles of my mother and grandmother were what truly showed me from a young age, the power of the feminine. After Mascha’s treatment of the work, it is now titled and known as ‘Gaia Panagia’.
