Artist: Gregory Nikshumika Created: July 2025 Title: Merit and Scorn Festival / 功徳と嘲笑のフェスティバル Exhibition: Carnival Dharmas Medium: Digital collage, pixel-sorted carnival iconography Dimensions: 3580 × 4730 px
Materials: Repurposed ukiyo-e characters, malfunctioning roller-coasters, fortune and Dharma wheels, flat tires, festival tents, night sisters, romantic love, power-seeking psychopaths in our lives, dark triads, vanity, praise despite great faults, blame despite significant virtues, merit-based scholarships, scornful people, luxury cars flambé, sages and clowns, nirvana seedlings, seeds of trouble, the three poisons, clown-sage offering nil blessings for both applause and ridicule.
Description: Merit and Scorn Festival contemplates praise, blame, and carnival culture through the lens of Buddhism’s Eight Worldly Winds: gain and loss, fame and disrepute, praise and blame, pleasure and pain. A grey, glitch-filled center provides breathing room among competing icons, suggesting the impermanence inherent in carnival spectacle. The viewer’s eye zigzags from a spinning Dharma wheel to a luxury super-car derailed on roller-coaster rails, passes pixelated ghosts, and lands finally upon a clown-Bodhisattva whose hands rise in paradoxical benediction: every ticket wins, every ticket loses. Everything is okay. Allow everything, at least sometimes, to simply exist.
