An eye spy portrait of the laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae). This image highlights many of the creatures this beautiful bird feeds on. Created from deep within the rainforest of northern Australia. I photographed the smaller animals using a macro 100mm lens and the bird using a 100-400mm canon lens.

This particular bird would visit me in the garden every morning while I was having my first coffee. It would watch me and then burst into a long laughing chorus directed towards me.

The iconic kookaburra is embedded deep within the Australian psyche and landscape. Hearing them in the backyard keeps me grounded & is a constant reminder of where I live. The laughing kookaburra is native to eastern Australia.

The name "laughing kookaburra" refers to the bird's "laugh", which it uses to establish territory among family groups. It can be heard at any time of day, but most frequently at dawn and dusk.
