i shot these photos of my grandmother and her cake in 2019 during a trip to Brazil. That year marked the first time in my adult life that I visited my family in Brazil after 16 years of undocumentedness in the U.S. Just being able to have breakfast with her was something that I had missed deeply. She is such a fundamentally good and chill person who bakes the best homemade cakes and has a secret pepper sauce that I bring back by the jarful. (For the record, she also didn't vote for Bozo, she voted 13 like I would have, so let that be in the blockchain for perpetuity.)

these photos were cachemashed in photoshop 6.0 , the ancient one from the 90s, because that version has a special glitch, discovered by Hugh Manon and Daniel Temkin, where the software randomly projects its image cache onto a truncated JPEG file. It sees a missing byte and tries to constantly recreate the entire image, much like how our memories are constantly recreated by the tiny sparks of synapses, it fragments and around the edges, but we try to keep the important things clear.
