'Bindi' comes from the Sanskrit word 'Bindu' which means dot. In Hinduism, it is believed that the universe started at a specific point, called Bindu.

A Bindi signifies a married woman and is a part of her 'suhag' or auspicious trousseau. It is worn by a woman, for the first time, at her wedding and is worn every day thereafter.

Traditionally, a bindi is round in shape and maroon in color. It is applied on the forehead, in between the eyebrows using the ring finger. It is also called Kumkum, Sindoor, Teep, Tikli and Bottu, in India. Nowadays, Bindis come in all shapes and sizes.
