Orbited by two moons, Arrakis (known as Dune to the Fremen) was a harsh planet located at the edge of the Imperium in the Canopus star system, far from the main populated worlds and their trade routes. It was the original source and for a long time the only source of the "spice", vital for space travel.

The surface of Arrakis consisted primarily of deserts and dunes, hence the planet's alternative name, Dune. Several weathered mountain ranges stretched across the planet, dividing the deserts and harboring the planet's limited life forms. Rock formations also covered the planet's surface.

The atmosphere was made up of levels of oxygen and nitrogen compatible enough to allow a human to live on the planet without the need for breathing apparatus. In the other hand, water was a central part of Fremen culture. Indeed, for Fremen, water was life. To conserve against the unnecessary loss of water in the desert, Fremen wore complex full-body filtration systems called stillsuits, which reclaimed the body's moisture.
