This work was generated using a purpose-built engine, Morpheme, that embodies the initial concept of Applied Poetics and renders it operable by transforming linguistic input into dynamic visual forms through a three-stage processing pipeline employing HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. The idea being to treat words as generative parameters for a living visual system.
Morpheme employs a semantic-to-parametric translation system. Each word in the input poem is algorithmically converted into a numerical parameter that directly controls visual generation. In this way, each word becomes a parameter directly controlling the emergence of visual form. The poem ceases to exist as static text and becomes instead a living geometric organism that breathes, evolves, and remembers. This process creates a living parameter space where:
• Syllable count affects intensity (breath/rhythm)
• Word position creates sequential weighting (narrative flow)
• Phonetic length adds textural variation (sonic materiality)
Each execution generates a unique numerical fingerprint derived from the poem's linguistic DNA.
The system identifies the dominant parameter (word with highest calculated value) and maps it onto archetypal geometric forms associated with the word in question. These forms are then subjected to continuous morphological breathing—subtle oscillations that prevent a static outcome.
The final stage renders the breathing form within an ambient field of particles and environmental effects, creating what the system terms "presence"—the emergent quality that distinguishes living forms from geometric abstractions.
When new poems are introduced, Morpheme doesn't simply replace the previous form but creates smooth morphological transitions over 4-second intervals. This interpolation system allows one poem-form to dissolve into another through intermediate states that exist nowhere in language but only in the transitional space.
Each "ghost layer" preserves previous poem-forms at decreasing opacity levels, creating a visual palimpsest where historical states remain faintly visible beneath current manifestations. This mirrors both the archaeological nature of language and the persistent traces of memory in consciousness.
The system also implements caesura (poetic pause/break) through algorithmic image fracturing. This creates visual enjambment—broken continuities that force new readings of the form, analogous to line breaks in traditional poetry but operating in purely visual space.
As digital artworks, each generated state of Morpheme represents a unique configuration of:
1. Source Text: The input poem that generated the parameter space
2. Seed Value: The random seed that affects all probabilistic choices
3. Timestamp: The moment of generation
4. Ghost Layers: The accumulated memory state
5. Background Mode: The contextual color environment
6. Parameter Fingerprint: The exact numerical state derived from the text
This creates provable uniqueness while maintaining the work's essential character as a living system rather than a static image.
