Description

Artist Linda Dounia contemplates memory, loss, and change in her poetic collection, A Staircase Home. Her artwork is designed through an algorithm built around her memory of the staircase that led up to her beloved childhood home in the small Senegalese city of Mbour, a home that was removed to make way for a growing city. The staircase motif climbs back and forth in each of 12 digital artworks—tufted carpets in their physical forms—at varying heights and angles in a mix of earthy and vibrant tones. Conceived on an exploratory trip to Morocco where the physical medium for her collection was chosen, the works also take inspiration from Moroccan artisanal traditions. The abstract shapes that rise and fall in a zigzag pattern from edge to edge, create a dynamic symbol of connection between past and present and technology and craft.

These digital works represent the algorithmic foundations for 12 tufted carpets woven by Moroccan artisans. Linda Dounia's algorithm captures her memory of the staircase leading to her beloved childhood home in Mbour, Senegal—a home removed for urban development. Conceived during an exploratory trip to Morocco, the staircase motifs climb back and forth at varying heights and angles, creating dynamic symbols connecting past and present through traditional craft.
