Zuka Kipiani is an artist who uses artificial intelligence and other software tools to explore the relationship between technology and art, questioning originality and authorship in human-machine creativity. Kipiani moved from physical to digital art after discovering AI in 2020, finding in its unpredictable, intuitive outputs an echo of the emotion-driven process of physical art-making.
In the series Overthinking Machines (2024), Kipiani treats AI's 'low-confidence' object-detection errors and its image morphing and interpolation not as flaws to correct but as creative material, using the resulting misreadings to raise questions about surveillance and privacy in a world of constant digital monitoring.
In Decoding Perception, Kipiani deploys a custom AI model, originally built for object recognition, to search Google Street View images for intangible human concepts such as love, jealousy, perseverance and wonder, a project that builds on Jon Rafman's earlier The Nine Eyes of Google Street View. Released as a 77-piece collection on Ethereum, it was presented by Artie Galerie.
