Zero Alpha is the alias of James Flynn, an artist and designer from Aotearoa/New Zealand who creates abstract digital works exploring dark, complex patterns drawn from geographic data. Using software such as TouchDesigner, Blender, and Cinema 4D, he constructs 3D landscapes from geodata gathered from Earth and off-world sources, then deforms them into abstract, often alien-like forms.
Based in Mohua/Golden Bay, New Zealand, Flynn is self-taught and also trained at the School of Creativity and Art in Wellington. He is involved in the local Arts Council and teaches home-schooled students animation and design. Flynn entered the crypto art space in March 2021, selling his first NFT, Aureum Chaos, on OpenSea, and has since minted exclusively on the platform Hic et Nunc. Drawing on science fiction and underground drum and bass culture, he often produces original soundscapes for the works using both analog hardware synthesizers and software equivalents.
Chaos Of Solus is presented in a full 4K version on his portfolio, after the HTML player edition on Hic et Nunc sold out. Flynn's Shadow Play series takes geodata extracted online, models it into 3D landscapes, and deforms the results in Cinema 4D into abstract shapes that often resemble alien insects and have also been described as machine souls. In SP7-Descent, part of the series, machines that have evolved a higher conscience and won freedom from their creators are shown at the moment their creators regain control of one of them.
