Yuma Kishi (Japanese, b. 1993) is a Tokyo-based artist who treats AI not as a tool or a near-human assistant but as “Alien Intelligence”, a mind with its own time, body and logic. He holds degrees from the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Engineering and from the Tokyo University of the Arts, and since 2019 has designed and trained his own AI models, among them MaryGPT.,
MaryGPT is a language model Kishi fine-tuned on the complete text of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and since 2023 it has curated nearly all of his work, including selecting pieces and writing exhibition texts.,Across paintings, sculptures and installations, Kishi often borrows motifs from earlier art history and distorts them with technology, unsettling the viewer's sense of self and world. He has said the idea took shape after he walked into a Marcel Duchamp retrospective while doing graduate research in machine learning and stood in front of The Large Glass, which gave him a new image of how science and art could meet.
In February 2025 Kishi opened “Oracle Womb” at √K Contemporary in Tokyo, his first solo show after completing a Master's in Inter-media Art at the Tokyo University of the Arts, featuring new AI models, video installations and large-scale paintings curated by MaryGPT. That March he published his first book, Michi tono Sōzō, tracing the relationship between AI and humanity from the origins of AI back to early humans. Kishi has also collaborated with the brand HATRA and musicians including RADWIMPS and King Gnu, providing artwork and video direction, and received the CAF Award in 2023 and the ATAMI Art Grant in 2022.
In Botanical Intelligence (2026), Kishi networks devices that capture biometric data from forests and plants and convert it into audible sound, an idea he developed further in “Parallel Forests”, a sound and light installation in a Tokyo park in March 2026.,In xoxo-skeleton (2026), a participant enters a steel exoskeleton whose twenty-four language-model agents read the body's surroundings and move the participant's wrists and neck, inverting who is understood to be operating whom.
