Yoshi Sodeoka is a Japanese-born multimedia artist and musician based in New York City, working across video, animation, print and sound.,His practice blends video feedback, glitch and generative processes into psychedelic, hypnotic moving-image work that has been described as difficult to categorize.,,Born in Yokohama, he moved to New York in the 1990s to study at Pratt Institute, and has lived and worked there since.,
In 1996 he became creative director of Word Magazine, an early multimedia online publication active from 1995 to 2000. He has since made animated editorial work for The New York Times, Wired, The Atlantic, ProPublica and The New Yorker.His work has been exhibited at institutions including the Centre Pompidou, Tate Britain and MoMA.,In 2013 he co-founded the experimental video art collective Undervolt & Co, devoted to abstract audiovisual publishing and online exhibition.,His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of the Moving Image and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Working mainly in After Effects, Sodeoka builds unpredictability into his process, using randomising 'wiggle' expressions so that curation, rather than control, shapes the final image.He has described his recurring interest in mathematics, seen in works such as r = θ and 1.618, as a way of pointing to the patterns that connect precision and chaos in nature, without offering answers.His Wetware works, inspired by microscopic images of living organisms he encountered during the Covid pandemic, extend that interest in organic systems into digital form.
His music video work includes Tame Impala's Elephant (2012) and Metallica's You Must Burn! (2023), for which the band asked for his signature video-feedback style.,He has also made visuals for Oneohtrix Point Never, Max Cooper and Genghis Tron, drawing on a music background that lets him translate sound directly into layered, saturated imagery.,
In 2021 the Museum of the Moving Image paired him with Jonas Lund for Terms of Agreement, a Tezos Foundation-backed commission exploring the tension between precision and chaos in self-organizing systems.The museum paired the two again in 2025 for a further Media Wall commission.His 2023 mural Wind Flags #4, composed from algorithmically generated video stills, was commissioned for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.In the 2025 exhibitions “Down the Silicon Meadow” in Berlin and “Patterns of Entanglement” in Tokyo, he showed work combining particle systems, vector graphics and AI-generated images to map digital experience onto natural phenomena, describing his approach as “birds that move like code, digital shapes that behave like weather”.,,
