Markus von Frieling, who works under the name xmvfx, paints with black acrylic on cheap copy paper using a tool he calls a Japan spatula, then scans the results and edits them digitally. He created his first piece using that technique in 2013. He began minting his work on the blockchain in January 2021, after discovering NFTs in late 2020.
