wondermundo, the alias of Mexican-American multimedia artist Jessica, makes digital art that processes dissociative identity and childhood trauma, using recurring imagery such as tape over the mouth and disembodied heads to represent hidden or silenced parts of herself.Before turning to art full time she spent more than 20 years in corporate content and learning design, and she entered the NFT space in April 2021.
Her work often begins from scanned physical sketches that she paints over digitally, layering glitch effects to blur the line between physical and digital media. In she swims in chaos, chains and tape over a figure's mouth represent parts of herself that were silenced growing up in a household marked by corporal punishment and financial hardship.The same imagery of plugged-in or disembodied heads recurs throughout her wonder system games series, which she began before she consciously understood the dissociated parts of herself the imagery depicts. the sage collection, a 2022 set of 37 drawings made during a stay at a mental health treatment center, was later digitized and released in short listing windows, with unsold editions burned.
She has sold work across platforms including Foundation, Makersplace, OpenSea, objkt.com, Versum, fx(hash), Paras and Exchange.art, as well as through her own $wonder contract on Manifold.She also helped build early NFT communities including #famjam and #smolgang, and in 2022 she joined the NEAR Curator's DAO to help onboard artists onto the Paras platform.,Her 2023 piece some kind of wonderland was included in Right Click Save's coverage of the gift-economy platform zeroone.In January 2024 she wrote an essay titled Cryptoart Is Dead. Long Live Cryptoart on the Blockchain, which NFT Morning used to open a debate about the state of crypto-art.
