VES3L is the code-art practice of the artist Vincent, who writes algorithms that generate emergent complexity from the interaction of simple, rule-based elements to produce generative art. Vince is based in New York City and earned a Master's degree in Computer Science from New York University in 2021.,He has published long-form generative art collections on Art Blocks, Verse, and fx(hash).
Vince took his first steps into generative art in 2019 with a long-form study of fractal trees and the variations that could emerge from them. That idea grew into Seedlings, a 199-edition generative collection released on Art Blocks in November 2022, in which fractal trees bloom alongside abstracted flowers, suns and moons. The collection was inspired by an appreciation for green spaces that developed after years of living in New York City, and a quarter of proceeds above the resting price were directed to organizations supporting the preservation and development of urban green spaces.
VES3L's long-form series Solve-Un-Solve was presented by The Garden, curated by Ivan Zhyzhkevych, and exhibited at Verse.,Each work in the series begins in a randomised, scrambled arrangement of blocks that reconfigures itself so that every side of the structure becomes a single uniform colour, in the manner of a Rubik's cube. The structure follows a node-based hierarchy borrowed from computer programming, in which each block depends on its parent block, so the piece must be solved from the outermost ancestor blocks down to their descendants. The series comprises 190 works, all viewable and collectable on Verse. VES3L's aesthetic favours sketchy, expressionist imperfection over the polished geometry common in generative art, giving the work a stop-motion quality that recalls pen plotters, dither patterns and dot matrices used in early generative art by artists such as Vera Molnár and Harold Cohen.As of 2024, the VES3L project was on pause.
