Vector Meldrew is a British artist who makes surrealist animated worlds that explore decentralisation, community and humour. He developed the identity Vector Meldrew as an avatar to serve as his muse and to move focus away from his own persona, which he says helps him create more freely.
Meldrew began making Flash cartoons in his bedroom as a teenager during the early days of Web 1.0, immersed in London's early grime scene. Missy Elliott and Channel U picked up his cartoons, which gave him an early boost. Over the following two decades, he continued collaborating with a range of grime and dubstep musicians on visual work. He set up an early grime website and forum while based in London during Web 1.0's early years. By the mid-to-late 2000s he had moved to Bristol for university, where he lent his design, animation and VJ skills to the growing dubstep scene. There he worked with record labels, event organisers and artists tied to that scene.
