V4W.ENKO is the alias of Evgeniy Vashchenko (Ukrainian, b. 1981), an artist who builds custom software to generate real-time sound, video and installation work from self-programmed algorithms.Based in Kyiv, he trained as an architect before turning to music and new media around 2007.,
He studied music and painting as a teenager, then earned a bachelor's and master's degree in architecture, specializing in public buildings, at Kyiv's State Technical University of Construction and Architecture.After several years working in architecture, he returned to sound, carrying over an approach to algorithms he had learned there: seeing nature itself as an algorithmic structure.He builds his own applications in Max/MSP/Jitter, then generates both the sound and the visuals of a piece from the same underlying algorithmic structure.,
He has performed and exhibited at festivals including FIBER, Ars Electronica, CynetArt, Mutek and NextSound, and released work on labels such as Kvitnu, Electroton and Nexsound. In 2011 he founded the label FF'Space, devoted to algorithmic and abstract approaches to sound, visuals, design and micro-software.At the 2011 CynetArt Festival in Dresden, he performed a site-specific audiovisual piece with Andrey Kiritchenko inside the Recombinant Media Lab's CineChamber, an immersive ten-screen system.,He has also worked regularly with the analogue synthesist Aiuto, combining her modular frequencies with his software-driven sound.
His 2009 audiovisual album Harmonic Ratio was nominated in the Discovery category of the 2011 Qwartz Awards, directed by Alva Noto and Matali Crasset.His installation in[ter]sect translates brainwave data into sound and visual re-parametrisation.A related work, In[ter]sect(ion) - Planet 6 (2021), was included in Right Click Save's tribute to Ukrainian artists published days after Russia's 2022 invasion, raising funds for the Ukraine Emergency Response Fund.
