Urs Fischer (Swiss, b. 1973) is a contemporary artist known for large-scale sculptures, installations, and paintings that explore impermanence, decay, and the distortion of everyday objects. Born in Zurich, he studied photography at the Schule für Gestaltung and began his career at Gavin Brown's enterprise gallery in New York before going on to exhibit with galleries including Gagosian.
Fischer's practice spans sculpture, painting, photography, and installation, often transforming everyday objects such as chairs, tables, and bread into disorienting, whimsical forms. His career was launched at Gavin Brown's enterprise gallery in New York, alongside artists such as Peter Doig. At Gavin Brown's Enterprise booth at Art Basel in 2006, he showed Nach Jugendstiel kam Roccoko, a pack of cigarettes dragged in a circle across the floor by a motor suspended from the ceiling. In 2016, together with Laura Owens and Sam Falls, he created wall coverings for the pediatric inpatient rooms at Cedars-Sinai hospital as part of the RxArt program. In 2023 and 2024, he curated “John Chamberlain: THE TIGHTER THEY'RE WOUND, THE HARDER THEY UNRAVEL” at the Aspen Art Museum, a six-decade survey of the sculptor John Chamberlain's work, and wrote the accompanying book “John Chamberlain Against the World”.
