UBERMORGEN is the Swiss-Austrian-American duo of Hans Bernhard and Lizvlx, net art pioneers whose hoaxes, hacks and high-risk social experiments expose the workings of the internet, big tech and mass media.,In 2000, their project Vote-Auction let people buy and sell votes in the US presidential election online, reaching a global audience of 500 million and prompting CNN to call them “Maverick Austrian Business People”.
Formed in 1995, the duo describe themselves not as political activists but as actionists in the tradition of Viennese Actionism.,Bernhard also co-founded the net art collective Etoy.
In 2005, working with Paolo Cirio and Alessandro Ludovico, UBERMORGEN released Google Will Eat Itself, which used revenue from Google AdSense ads placed across a network of hidden websites to buy Google shares, framing the search company's own advertising system as the tool of its undoing. The project earned an honorable mention from Prix Ars Electronica and was part of the EKMRZ Trilogy alongside Amazon Noir and The Sound of eBay, the latter held in the collection of Basel's HEK (House of Electronic Arts).,,
For the Superenhanced project, UBERMORGEN worked with a former Guantánamo Bay guard, Chris Arendt, building an interrogation simulator from his testimony that visitors could operate themselves. The collaboration became unstable, and Arendt was arrested by Austrian police after a breakdown. The episode itself became part of the work, under the title Perpetrator. The material became “Userunfriendly”, the duo's first solo exhibition, at Carroll Fletcher in London in November 2013.
With artist Nye Thompson, UBERMORGEN began UNINVITED in 2018, a film built for a machine rather than a human audience that won the Lumen Prize Gold Award. It was installed with a mobile projecting robot at Furtherfield Gallery, London, and later projected across the front of ElectroPutere Gallery in Romania. In 2021, working with digital humanist Leonardo Impett and curator Joasia Krysa, UBERMORGEN made The Next Biennial Should Be Curated by a Machine, an AI system commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and the Whitney Museum that endlessly rewrites its own artist biographies, curatorial statements and reviews.UBERMORGEN also heads the Department of Digital Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
Their work has been exhibited at venues including the New Museum in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and SFMOMA.
