Tsung-yu Lu is a Taiwan-based artist whose practice is grounded in photography and extends into algorithmic art. His academic background in mechanical engineering leads him to approach art through structure, systems and rules, while visual intuition guides his judgment of line, texture, colour and composition.
Inversion has long been one of Lu's core image-making methods. He inverts photographs to observe how their colour, tonal relationships and texture change, developing an image-making language distinct from how a positive photograph is usually read. The photography series White Night, Black Day, Be and Alakṣaṇa extend this inversion process in different directions. Be builds each image from two everyday materials, paired with two texts tracing the memories and reflections associated with each, while Alakṣaṇa examines the relationship between photographic representation, reality and perception.
Early experiments with red-scale film and cross-processing first drew Lu's attention to colours that depart from their original appearance. His subsequent practice in algorithmic art deepened this sensitivity to colour and compositional variation, building images from rules and parameters and feeding what he learns back into his photography.He has released generative works including Sentiment Echo through the platform Alba and The Break through Kodadot.
He holds a master's degree in mechanical engineering from National Taiwan University, completed in 2010. In 2025 Artdoc Photography Magazine profiled his practice in an article titled Finding Balance Between Logic and Feeling. In 2026 he was a selected artist for the 7th “PHOTO GO TAIPEI” at the Bopiliao Historic Block in Taipei.
