Tom Luyten (Belgian, b. 1987) is a media artist, educator, and entrepreneur working across generative art, interactive installation, and product design. He founded the studio Fiftylab in 2010 after graduating cum laude from LUCA School of Arts, and teaches research, physical interface prototyping, and creative coding at the Maastricht Institute of Arts.
His doctoral research at Maastricht University, completed in 2019 with the thesis “The Art of Feeling Connected”, focused on interactive art in elderly care.As part of this research he co-developed VENSTER, an interactive artwork for nursing home residents with dementia. He then published pilot studies on how residents responded to it in the journal Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology.
His generative art includes Circular triangles, pseudo-3D triangles arranged in circular, vortex-like compositions generated by a rule-based system programmed in Processing.Another series, Stellar, abstracts constellations of stars into primitive shapes and points using the same method, with every run of the code producing a different outcome.,He has also released the numbered Machine series, including Machine 11: brutalist distortions, identified on his site as an NFT.He co-founded RipperDocs, a company that makes stage masks and custom interactive hardware for the music industry.Outside his art practice, he designed the Lenco-MD, a 3D-printed, modular record player built from renewable materials, whose first prototype was presented at IFA Berlin in 2018 and ranked among the fair's top three innovations.
