Tim Romanowsky (German, b. 1981) is an artist, lecturer and 2D animator based in Leipzig who works between abstraction and figuration in both painting and moving images.He moves between the two media deliberately, using the faster, looser medium of painting to counterbalance the slow, rule-bound process of animation.
He studied illustration and animation at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle, completing his diploma in 2010, and has freelanced across painting, animation and zine publishing ever since.His paintings and drawings sit between abstract composition and recognizable subject matter. Seen together as a series, they resolve into places, objects or portraits — in his words, they “don't have an explicit topic” and instead read as “a collection of details, and parts of an artificial world”. He draws in a sketchbook daily and has worked to make his paintings “more sharp and flat”, paring back visible brushstrokes while keeping their characteristic wobbly line.
His animated shorts include Peanuts (2010), Bowob (2015) and Nodon (2019), and his client work spans Apple, ARTE TV, KIKA and MDR. Since 2017 he has taught experimental drawing and animation at academic level in Germany, including a guest professorship at Hochschule Trier from 2022 to 2024.
With his partner, the illustrator Stefhany Y Lozano, he self-publishes zines and prints under the joint moniker Loro, including editions of the zine The Drying Octopus.,His digital animation Restful Swamp uses pastel tones and layered foreground and background elements to create the illusion of a shifting focal point, and was featured in MILK's Artist Spotlight series and in Fakewhale's 2024 group exhibition “ART MARKET: The State of Digital Humanism” on Foundation.,
