Tarık Tolunay (b. 1970) is an illustrator who creates Fractal İstanbul, a series of intricate illustrated maps that layer Istanbul's history, architecture and daily life into single compositions. He has produced the series from Istanbul since the early 2000s, after an earlier career as a cartoonist and advertising illustrator.
Tolunay began his career in 1989 as a cartoonist in the final generation associated with Oğuz Aral's satirical magazine Gırgır, working afterward for humor magazines and newspapers. He then spent many years producing storyboards, illustration and animation for the advertising industry before turning to the illustrated city maps that became Fractal İstanbul. Alongside his urban work, he has served as a court sketch artist at trials in Turkey, including the Cumhuriyet newspaper case, the NuSe case and the Gezi Park case.
