Superchief Gallery NFT is the digital-art arm of Superchief Gallery, founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 2012 by Edward Zipco and Bill Dunleavy as a space for underground artists. In March 2021 Superchief Gallery NFT opened as a standalone physical gallery in New York dedicated entirely to NFTs. Its inaugural show, “Season 1 Starter Pack”, brought in more than $1 million in sales within nine months.
The original Superchief Gallery began in 2012 with group exhibitions and community gatherings in Brooklyn. In 2016 Superchief opened its first fully digital art gallery, in Soho, New York, focused entirely on digital-native artists. For its first NFT exhibitions, the gallery minted works on behalf of traditional artists such as Logan Hicks, Alex Schafer, and Ron English, listing itself as the creator. It later moved toward letting artists mint and hold their own works, as when Swoon minted her pieces for the show “Cicada and Tymbal” and transferred them to the gallery as custodian.
