Studio Above&Below is a London-based art and technology practice that combines digital art, data and XR to draw together unseen connections between humans, machines and the environment. Daria Jelonek and Perry-James Sugden founded it in 2018 after graduating from the Royal College of Art. The studio often works with scientists, technologists and communities.
Their projects use immersive technologies and data to make the invisible visible and to give the environment a voice. A residency project at iMAL in Brussels, dated from 2022, looks into bioacoustics and interspecies communication. It aims to translate communication signals and real-time environmental data into an audiovisual artwork. The installation Regenerative Symphony uses AI and generative audiovisual patterns to envision a future reliant on recycling critical minerals. QUANTUM LENS is a mixed-reality artwork made in collaboration with quantum scientists. A headset acts as a symbolic lens that makes quantum phenomena visible as interactive virtual sculptures.
