Sophia the Robot is a humanoid robot developed by Hanson Robotics that has created AI-generated artwork in collaboration with human artists.Designed to resemble Audrey Hepburn, Sophia debuted at South by Southwest and became known for humanlike conversation.In 2017 Saudi Arabia granted Sophia citizenship, making her the first robot to receive national citizenship.,
In March 2021, Sophia released a series of NFT artworks made in collaboration with the Italian artist Andrea Bonaceto, launched through Hanson Robotics and iv gallery on Nifty Gateway.,For the project, titled ARTificial Intelligence, Sophia studied Bonaceto's paintings and produced her own compositions using neural networks and symbolic AI under the guidance of the Sophia team's designers and programmers.,Bonaceto said the two were “moving towards the new paradigm where robots and humans participate together in the creative process”.
Sophia also collaborated with the artist Nancy Baker Cahill on STONE SPEAKS, a site-specific augmented-reality work examining human-machine collaboration in addressing the climate crisis. The piece was shown as part of curator Jesse Damiani's “Posthuman Vernacular” exhibition series, alongside artists exploring how humans and machines communicate through digital expression.
