Ryan Green is a generative artist and BAFTA-winning video game designer whose work has appeared in WIRED, The New York Times and The New Yorker. He co-founded the studio Numinous Games in 2012, where he serves as creative director. Green was the subject of the documentary Thank You For Playing, about the making of his video game That Dragon, Cancer, built around his son Joel's fight against terminal brain cancer.
Green started development on That Dragon, Cancer in 2013, before Joel's death on March 13, 2014, and its release followed a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $100,000. Released in January 2016, the game translates the family's experience of grief into an interactive work with abstract, faceless figures and scenes that move between a hospital room, a forest, and a cathedral.The documentary chronicling its creation received a News & Documentary Emmy Award for Outstanding Arts and Culture Documentary in 2017.
Green also creates generative art for release on Art Blocks.,His collections there include flora, fauna, false gods & floodsand The Colors That Heal, produced for the nonprofit Endaoment in support of Turnout for Burnout, a fundraising campaign dedicated to addressing burnout among healthcare workers through generative art.He discussed the coding process behind The Colors That Heal on Art Blocks's Behind the Code series in January 2023.
