Ross Goodwin is a data poet and creative technologist who uses machine learning, natural language processing and physical computing to build new tools and interfaces for writing.,He trained in economics at MIT and later worked as a White House ghostwriter, drafting close to 100 presidential proclamations, before turning to computational creative writing full time.
In 2015 he began word.camera, a camera that narrates its own photographs in real time using neural networks, first as a web app and later as physical installations.,That year he also began publishing the essay series “Adventures in Narrated Reality”, reflecting on human-machine creative collaboration, work that the artist Merzmensch later cited as pivotal to his own understanding of generative AI art.The following year he built an AI bot named Benjamin to write the script for Sunspring, directed by Oscar Sharp for the SCI-FI-LONDON 48 Hour Film Challenge and released by Ars Technica in June 2016 as the world's first film made from an AI-written screenplay.,,
Between 2017 and 2018 he drove across the United States in a car rigged with a camera, microphone, GPS and clock feeding a neural network, generating the text of the novel 1 the Road in real time. In 2018 he made London's Trafalgar Square lions “roar poetry” in Please Feed The Lions, a public artwork made with the stage designer Es Devlin, and in 2020 he co-wrote the lyrics for Chain Tripping, the Grammy-nominated album by YACHT.
As a member of theVERSEverse he contributed to VERSA, an AI poetry-writing project rooted in the visual language of word.camera, and to After Ginsberg, a 2023 fx(hash) generative drop developed with the Fahey/Klein Gallery that used AI to riff on Allen Ginsberg's own portraits.,,A 2023 reiteration of 1 the Road appeared in the exhibition “POÈME SBJKT” at Librairie Galerie Métamorphoses, alongside works by Agnès Thurnauer, Lillian-Yvonne Bertram and Christian Bök.
