Roman Casus

Bio

The Russian artist Roman Casus explores conflict, politics, nudity and anonymity through paintings built from fragments of news footage, videos and live broadcasts. Sketches for the paintings are assembled from these digital artifacts, then combined with figurative and abstract painting techniques so that random deformations and color distortions make a single, fixed interpretation impossible.

Reflecting on the source material for these paintings, Roman Casus has said, “painting allows me to impart these digital phantoms with a substance”. Describing the method, the artist explains, “I combine contradictory elements to deconstruct the original narrative”.
