fangs, also known as Rodrigo Courtney and Cryptofangs, is a Mexican experimental filmmaker and video artist. Framed as an autobiographical project, his work turns everyday scenes into colourful absurdity or fantastical, mythical imagery. Some sequences are staged like theatre or performance art, captured on CCTV footage and then glitched.
Courtney ran a creative agency before turning fully to filmmaking. In 2008 he was invited to produce a feature length documentary, his first formal work in video. In 2016 he was selected for an Art Biennale in Bolivia, where he presented his first short documentary, about heroin addicts in Mexico. The New York City Council of Arts later invited him to teach experimental film at the Millennium Film Workshop. He has since shown experimental film and video art at venues including the Museo de las Artes in Mexico City and La Tabacalera in Madrid, among other galleries and museums across the Americas and Europe.
In February 2021, Courtney began selling his video art as NFTs after the artist Moxarra Gonzalez helped onboard him. He has described his partner, the artist Hanna-Katarina, as a central influence on his work, and the two create together. He also presented an exhibition in his hometown of Colima, Mexico, curated by Hugo Cervantes.
