Rick Silva is a Brazilian-American artist who makes experimental 3D animations that explore virtuality, futurology and speculative ecologies. His videos, websites and images also address notions of landscape and wilderness in the 21st century. He was born in Brazil and lives in Eugene, Oregon, where he teaches at the University of Oregon.
Satellite Jockey was presented in the Digital a la Carte section of Sonar 2006. In it, Silva hacked Google Earth for live audiovisual performance, mixing footage from the software with music. His series En Plein Air consists of images created at the locations they depict, and had its first solo show at TRANSFER in 2013. In Render Garden, a real-time 3D work from 2014, he worked with the digitized landscape, remix and glitch aesthetics. The series Sky Burial uses quadcopter drones and digital images to reflect on ritual and ascension. With Nicolas Sassoon he made the collaborative project SIGNALS, which focuses on immersive audiovisual renderings of seascapes.
