Reinder Nijhoff is a creative coder and software engineer based in Utrecht. Their generative work explores restrictive systems — a small API, a single shader, a square canvas — which they see as a way of stimulating creativity. They tend to build platforms for others to create with code, including Turtletoy, a generative plotter-art platform with over 8,000 users, and Dittytoy, for code-driven generative music.
They studied physics and mathematics at Utrecht University before co-founding the software agency Infi in 2003, where they spent a decade building its technical foundation. They then took a sabbatical to coach rowing at international level before returning to code in 2015, when they joined the studio Monks, where they work on interactive 3D and web projects. Past projects include a real-time Wolfenstein ray tracer built in WebGL1 in 2019 and The Uncensored Library, a recreation in Minecraft made with DDB Berlin for Reporters Without Borders.Their generative piece Fractal Marbles, minted on FxHash, was among the works that inspired fellow artist Kaloh to create their own debut generative collection.
