Rare is a digital painter and post-photographer who collaborates with machine learning neural networks to create two-dimensional artwork, blending new technology with the essence of traditional painting. Many works begin as GAN-generated reference images that are then digitally painted by hand from start to finish, a hybrid process the artist describes as running inputs through the machine and back.
Several works reimagine earlier images through this AI-assisted process: its only a flesh wound... reworks Peter Paul Rubens' Saint Sebastian, while Lilith; Evangelion reimagines the character Lilith from the anime Evangelion. A related series of boy and girl portraits, including boy, gucci, boy with the eye, boy, flowers and girl, flowers, manipulates AI-generated inputs before painting over the printed outputs by hand.
