Radarboy3000, the alias of South African artist George Galanakis, is an experimental new media artist working at the convergence of data, minimalism and blockchain technology. His mostly monochromatic, minimalist work draws on computational art and dance music aesthetics, using generative design and data sculpture for installations, audiovisual performances and crypto art.
Over 25 years he has worked at the intersection of art, technology and human experience, living and working in Tokyo, Berlin, New York, Hong Kong and Cape Town before settling in Singapore.,He has led innovation roles at Cartier, Dentsu and TBWA, and at Cartier's Brooklyn Retail Lab he invented Looking Glass, an augmented-reality try-on system that shows clients rings that are not in stock.,His accolades include a Loerie Grand Prix in the digital category and a Webby Award. He is also the founder of Crypto Art Week Asia.
Counting to a million grew out of a meeting at Refik Anadol's Architectural Intelligence Lab. For the piece, he trained a neural network on fifty years of Amsterdam's birth, death and migration data to predict the city's growth. The predictions were rendered as a real-time generative data sculpture, shown monthly across the Netherlands' out-of-home screen network over six months. In 2022 he created Permanence, a live-mint generative art installation for Singapore Art Week. The work continually looked for new blocks on the Tezos chain, visualized each one, and minted itself back into that same block. It explored how blockchain technology produces its own state of permanence, a feat of live minting achieved only a handful of times before it.
He has also released Music for Blockchains, one of the first fully on-chain generative audio pieces inscribed on Bitcoin as ordinals. The collection comprises 64 long-form generative artworks, one for each character of the Bitcoin hash, that visualize and sonify the data of each newly mined block. In 2022 he collaborated with the eyewear studio bbase on bb20, a generative NFT series released over 12 phases whose shape and movement were driven by data from the brand's sustainable-materials initiative.
