Philip Patrick Ihechu, known as Philheal, is a self-taught Nigerian multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago who works across illustration, animation and 3D art. His storytelling draws on African spirituality, mythology and pre-colonial history to create fantasy worlds that bridge tradition and the spiritual realm. Influenced by comic books, manga and animation, he treats each piece as a narrative moment, a still frame from a larger, unfolding story.
Before turning to art, Ihechu studied human anatomy, earning a Bachelor of Science from Bowen University in Iwo, Osun, Nigeria. He co-authored a 2020 study in the European Journal of Anatomy on how a lime peel extract reduced tramadol-induced testicular damage in a rat model. He began minting his work on the blockchain in 2021.
His ongoing series Dibia and the Masquerade is a long-form world-building project inspired by indigenous belief systems, following spiritual intermediaries navigating a world where ancient forces and emerging technologies collide. The series is set in a world called Ala, and explores diverse characters, stories, beliefs and history.,Through the project, Ihechu aims to expand the presence of African fantasy in global visual culture.
Dibia and the Masquerade has been released as both 1/1 works and editions on Ethereum, including through a curated Nifty Gateway drop titled “Protectors of Eden”, alongside work on Tezos and Solana. He has since exhibited internationally, including in New York, Senegal, Los Angeles, Miami, South Korea, Japan and France.Since September 2024 he has also held an artist profile on 6529.io, associated with its The Memes collection.
