Phaust is a generative art collective based in London and Brighton whose members bring backgrounds in computer science and neuroscience to code-based work exploring the intersection of art and science.,Randomness runs through the collective's work as both a creative force and a way of examining humanity's place within complex systems.
Working with code as an artistic medium,the collective is also interested in collaboration itself, whether between individuals, between human and machine, between themselves and nature, or with those who came before them.,Phaust has released long-form generative collections on Art Blocks, Verse and fxhash.Their debut collection, Pointila, released on Art Blocks in September 2022, combines the meticulous dot patterns of Pointillist painting with the channelled randomness of generative code to build a range of landscapes.,
Their follow-up collection Co(r)ral builds on Pointila's dot-based technique to depict coral bleaching, contrasting a healthy, colourful reef state with a bleached one.It was exhibited at UNESCO headquarters in Paris in partnership with Museum Week, UNESCO and Verse, and shown on more than 1,600 video billboards across the city.,Other collections include Luminaries, generative moons composed from a handful of geometries that cycle through a monthly retrograde,and Platonics, which arranges the five Platonic solids into geometric layouts of varying density to draw order and emergent chaos out of the same simple system.
Their work has been included in group exhibitions such as “Node to Node” at Kate Vass Galerie's Art Salon Paris in 2023, alongside generative artists including Casey Reas and Peter Beyls.,Their fxhash collection Paper Planes, an homage to origami built from a set of hand-drawn pen styles,was noted in 2022 for outperforming its original mint price on the secondary market.
