Paolo Čerić (Croatian, b. 1990), known as Patakk, is a computer scientist and visual artist who explores how simple algorithms can generate intricate, organic structures.Born and based in Zagreb, he was introduced to generative art by his uncle and taught himself the rest through trial and error and online tutorials.,He works as a machine learning research engineer alongside his art practice.
Čerić holds two master's degrees from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Zagreb, and studied artificial intelligence at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid through the Erasmus programme. He began making digital animations around 2011 while still a student, at first mimicking other coders' work before developing a personal style that ranged from pulsating geometric patterns to glitch art, published on his blog Patakk. While a student, he also collaborated with the Zagreb Dance Center on interactive projections for live dance performances.,
His work is built with Python, Processing, Blender, and Cinema 4D, often using custom tools he writes himself to automate variation across large-scale series. Among his bodies of work is Single Stroke, which renders human forms as continuous spirals of ink inspired in part by classical sculpture. His early GIF animations were included in “Moving the Still” at Art Basel Miami, a group show co-curated by Michael Stipe of R.E.M..His work has also been shown in exhibitions including D-izložba in Zagreb and Perfekt Prints in Vienna, and in recent years he has expanded his practice to include diffusion models.,The 2022 fx(hash) collection char is made of repeated computer-character forms. It conveys rhythm through static imagery, evoking a longer history of capturing motion that runs from Muybridge to Duchamp.
