Bio

Paper Buddha is an anonymous American collage artist based in St. Louis, working across digital collage, commissioned projects and occasional traditional works. The work brings together vintage American pulp imagery, Indonesian Wayang Kulit shadow-puppet forms and Buddhist thought, assembling fragments from different worlds into dense, deliberately unresolved compositions. Alan Watts and Shunryu Suzuki, whose approaches to Zen resist easy conclusions, are cited as important reference points.

The artist has worked in on-chain art since around 2020, releasing series across platforms including SuperRare, OBJKT and fx(hash).^,^, In 2022 the generative series Paper Mandala, made with Pixel Boy on fxhash, encoded the artist's collage style into algorithmic form across 384 individually generated works.^, In March 2024 SuperRare curated Paper Scrolls, a 42-piece long-format digital collage series exploring the world of American pulp magazines, released through a lazy mint. Reflecting on his practice, the artist has said, “I'm just the artist, not the monk”.

Paper Buddha has also worked as a Tezos baker, running a node called The Temple that offers staker-gated access to his work as a form of patronage. In an October 2025 podcast interview he described his practice as “everything is a remix of a remix of a remix”, tracing a three-stage workflow of gathering pulp imagery, cutting collages by hand on an iPad, then sharing the finished work.
