The Swiss artist OLAF BREUNING works across painting, drawing, ceramics, metal sculpture, film and NFTs. In his own words, he approaches his art in a simple, primitive way. He has named horror films and silent movies among his sources of inspiration. His 2018 work Random thoughts about life 6 was described as cartoonish social commentary.
Breuning has said that his multimedia installation Hello, Darkness (2002) was made in a period when artists took inspiration from film, music and advertising. It was first presented at the Swiss Institute in New York and was shown in 2003 at the Liverpool Biennale and at Magasin in Grenoble. The Migros Museum in Zurich later bought it. For “All About Laughter”, a 2006 group show at the Mori Museum in Tokyo curated by Mami Kataoka, he made Eatmes, an ensemble of creatures made out of food. The sculpture exists in an edition of three. He first showed his Art Freaks in 2010 at Metro Pictures. From 2005 to 2012 he filmed three Home movies with Brian Kerstetter as the lead actor, a character he describes as a naive Western man.
