Norman Harman is a Scottish artist, born in Edinburgh, whose practice — described by his gallery as POSTPAINTING — merges traditional painting with artificial intelligence and digital systems to explore distortion, control and aesthetic entropy. He paints into corrupted or AI-generated images, reconstructing fractured visual data into works that sit between figuration and abstraction. He studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art from 1997 to 2001, where he won the RSA Latimer Painting Prize.
After years spent working in Northern England, Harman returned to Edinburgh in 2015 and is affiliated with the art collective Ltd Ink Corporation. On July 13, 2019 he minted his first digital work, Android Plaza – Double Presenter, beginning the Android Plaza series of glitched portraits. His The Pentland Experiment series depicts his hometown of Edinburgh through staged, dystopian compositions drawn from photography, found imagery and television stills, addressing the impact of capitalism on the city. Harman's distorted figuration has been compared to the work of Gerhard Richter, Francis Bacon and Frank Auerbach. He collaborated with the writer Irvine Welsh on the short film Message From The Skies, shown in Edinburgh. His first serial collection, SIGHTSEERS (2022), 500 works whose landscape draws on the sightseers who watched the 1950s nuclear bomb tests outside Las Vegas, became one of the most acclaimed releases of early AI cryptoart, followed in 2023 by the 250-work Sightseers: Perimeter Town; SIGHTSEERS 179 has entered the permanent collection of the Francisco Carolinum museum in Linz.
