nix.eth is a generative artist working primarily in vector-based geometry, using code to draw out patterns the eye already recognizes as beautiful. His work treats the blockchain itself as a medium for connectedness in an increasingly digital society, a theme he traces back to an earlier career as a technology entrepreneur focused on social applications.
He first became interested in Bitcoin as a teenager in 2012, after reading Neal Stephenson's novel Cryptonomicon, and in 2021 he left his career as a tech founder and software engineer to work in web3 full time.His genesis collection, Treeangles, is a fully on-chain generative project. After it launched, other artists took its underlying data to create their own interpretations, something nix.eth has said he wants to see more of as a form of collaboration among artists and collectors.
In QuineNFT, he set out to test whether a generative artwork's algorithm or its output is the true artwork, by writing a smart contract that renders its own runtime bytecode as the piece itself. He named the project after a quine, the term for a self-replicating computer program.His 2024 drop Hexag⬡ns replaces numeric IDs with unique names for each token, with each one's underlying data pulled from measurements of quantum vacuum fluctuations supplied by ANU's Quantum Optics Group.
He has also worked outside the blockchain: The Storm of Twin Fates, a one-of-one physical print made from 24,065 vector triangles, was created for the Ashland Children's Theatre and sold at its charity auction in November 2024. Inspired by the storm at the start of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, he drew on his own experience navigating Atlantic storms as a young Navy sailor to render the water.
