Nathan Boey is a Canadian multimedia artist and director whose practice bridges filmmaking, animation and AI-generated imagery.Trained in film at Concordia University, he spent two decades directing stop-motion shorts and editing films, earning a regional Emmy Award, before turning to artificial intelligence, which he calls “a superpower for creativity”.,
In 2022 Boey conceptualized and organized Pass the Ball, a collaborative animated sequence forty months in the making, in which 40 animators from around the world each contributed a three-second clip following a shape-shifting red orb, passing it from one artist's segment to the next. Its styles range from stop-motion to digital animation, reflecting the different techniques of its contributors.
He is also a co-founder of AI OR DIE, a sketch comedy collective that makes its work entirely with AI.,In his series Unmoored (2023), shown in Fellowship's exhibition “Post Photographic Perspectives II – Acceptable Realities”, Boey displaces familiar objects, locations and tones drawn from personal memory into unexpected pairings.,The series comprises 100 individual works.He has described his process as juggling memory, the language of his AI prompts, and his own trained eye to judge what is working, sometimes finding that the AI offers a surprise better than what he had imagined.
