Nathan Boey is a Canadian multimedia artist and director whose practice bridges filmmaking, animation and AI-generated imagery. Trained in film at Concordia University, he spent two decades directing stop-motion shorts and editing films, earning a regional Emmy Award, before turning to artificial intelligence, which he calls “a superpower for creativity”.
In 2022 Boey conceptualized and organized Pass the Ball, a collaborative animated sequence forty months in the making, in which 40 animators from around the world each contributed a three-second clip following a shape-shifting red orb, passing it from one artist's segment to the next. Its styles range from stop-motion to digital animation, reflecting the different techniques of its contributors.
