Moxarra Gonzalez is a Mexican artist whose brightly coloured drawings and paintings blend pop culture and memes with traditional Mexican imagery such as skulls and the iconography of Día de los Muertos.,Based in Mexico City, he became one of the earliest NFT artists after a drawing from Dada.nyc's Creeps & Weirdos project was included in Jason Bailey's December 2017 article on blockchain art.,,
Moxarra studied visual arts at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León and began working as an illustrator for a newspaper in San Luis Potosí around 2007, where daily exposure to stories of crime and violence shaped the darker imagery in his work. In his physical work he uses oil, acrylic, pencil, pen, watercolor and even coffee on paper, wood and canvas, alongside a growing digital drawing practice.He began minting on Dada.nyc, the collaborative drawing platform, in 2015 after clicking a Facebook advertisement, drawing collaboratively with other artists using the exquisite corpse technique.,The critic and collector Jason Bailey has cited Moxarra's Dada.nyc work as his own first NFT purchase, made in 2017.
In Mexico City he became part of a circle of crypto artists including Gus Grillasca and neurocolor. With neurocolor he later co-created “The NonNFT Summit”, an artist-run event seeking to revive the spirit of crypto art before the Beeple sale and the rise of profile-picture projects. His work developed into a form of crypto-cartoonism that critiques and celebrates internet culture through a memetic lens.
After several early years using only Dada.nyc, he began sending his portfolio to platforms including Makersplace and KnownOrigin in late 2019, and by 2022 was minting on seven platforms beyond Dada with a global community of collectors.,In 2021 he minted NFTEvil, a satirical piece styled as a mock news headline, “Old Artist Yells at NFTs”, critiquing the debate among artists over the environmental cost of blockchain mining. He donated half of its proceeds to the GreenNFTs initiative.That same year GM RIGHT CLICKERS! was featured as a KnownOrigin catalogue example.
