Owen McAteer, known as Motus Art, is an Irish new media artist based in Madrid, Spain. He creates living artworks using code and mathematical systems, manifesting as kinetic flipdot displays and interactive installations of colour and light. His practice explores the human connection with the hidden world around us, uncovering beauty within the unpredictable.
A returning artist on Art Blocks,he released Balletic in 2022, a grid of rotating blocks choreographed to reveal hidden patterns and flowing figures.Fragmented Perception, from 2024, grew out of a coding error he transformed into a study of clarity and chaos,while Contours, from 2025, is a generative topographical map that continues to evolve over time.
In Linearity, released on Eclipse.art, he builds a fixed yet flexible grid of algorithmically generated lines and shapes on a muted, textured backdrop.Pulsewidth, presented at the Staple x ApeChain Creator Showcase during NFT NYC in June 2025, invites participants to shape the animated, generative work through a custom MIDI controller before minting their own version.
For Geist, a 2024 collaboration with the studio This is Loop,he programmed interactive visuals based on particle-physics data, using over 5,500 images from the Super-Kamiokande neutrino detector in Japan and data from Oxford's Department of Physics.The piece won the Interactive Lighting Design Award and a CODAworx award for experiential art.,PHI, an audiovisual installation and light sculpture at Bagni di Nerone in Pisa, translates the digits of the Golden Ratio into a piano melody and ambient soundscape composed by the artist's brother, Christopher McAteer.
