M.J. Lindow is a generative artist from the western United States whose work layers artificial imperfections and hand-drawn textures onto algorithmically generated imagery.,He draws on the natural world and the rugged landscapes near his home, close to the Rocky Mountains and the deserts of southern Utah.,Lindow quit his job as a data engineer in 2021 to focus on his art full time.
Inspired by art from an early age, he worked as a data engineer and data analyst building large-scale systems before turning his skill with code toward generative art.,He began minting generative collections on fxhash in the platform's first week of open beta in 2021 with Jardín.In the series Waiting in Afton (2021), each of the fifty images marks a day since he left that job.,He described the collection as “One image for each day since I quit my job as a data engineer to work on art full-time. Looking out my back window each day and watch the seasons change.”Beyond (2021) evokes the loneliness of humanity within the vastness of space, while Caught in a Void (2021) is a generative self-portrait of his experience with anxiety and depression during pandemic lockdowns, with each variation assigned a place, time, and emotion.Lindow has credited the concept of “Artificial Imperfection” layered into his generative work to fellow artist Yazid.
In Desert Sun Rising (2022), a seventy-piece collection minted in a Dutch auction on fxhash, a sunrise gradually gives way to color as sand and stone become a sanctuary.,In 2023 he released Rooted, an eighty-edition fxhash collection distributed through fxparams alongside other projects tied to the Non Fungible Conference in Lisbon.,His work has appeared in the group exhibitions “(Probably) All in the Mind” and “Arithmetic Phenomena”, both presented on Verse.Lindow described his art as “Using computers to augment human ability and free people to use their creative potential.”
