Miss AL Simpson (b. 1973)is the pseudonym of the artist Anna Louise Simpson,whose collage-based practice examines the commodification of women in advertising.Her work merges digital graffiti with animated 3D historical motifs,and since 2023 has extended into AI-generated imagery and video.,,By her own account, she has long worked by ripping up fashion magazines and obliterating their advertising imagery with ink, texture and paint.
Based in Edinburgh, Scotland,Simpson is self-taughtand has been active in the web3 art movement since 2018.Her early collage work draws on influences that include Martin Kippenberger and Robert Rauschenberg, incorporating found materials such as billposters, magazines and fragments of urban detritus.One such early work, OLD MONEY BANQUET, dates from 2019.
In May 2023 Simpson presented Metamorphoses, her first AI long-form project, as part of the group exhibition “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” at Kate Vass Galerie.,The 100-work series, generated with the AI tool 0KAI, drew on Ovid's Metamorphoses and blended prompts with her earlier analogue artwork from 2018.,In the myth of Narcissus, who falls for his own reflection, she found a parallel to people mistaking AI output for consciousness.
In June 2021 Simpson took part in Bonhams' inaugural NFT auction, “Cryptoart OGs”, in London, among the first artists shown at a major auction house. In February 2025 she exhibited and sold Les Drones de la Banlieue, an AI video work depicting a journey through the suburbs and landmarks of Paris, at Sotheby's Contemporary Discoveries auction in New York.
