Misaki Nakano is a Japanese artist and programmer based in Tokyo who creates generative visual art with WebGL, building custom software that calculates and renders color at the level of the individual pixel.,She has worked as a WebGL developer since 2016 and has collaborated as an artist with Sputniko! and the virtual human imma for Bright Moments in London and New York.
In 2022 she collaborated with the artist Sputniko! on The Nursery, Sputniko's first edition of 100 NFTs, minted at Bright Moments London. Nakano built the generative growth algorithm behind the work, in which each bud-like piece unfurls into abstract, flower-like forms over 48 to 56 weeks, with petal colors, layering and other traits determined by unique parameters. Inspired by Sputniko's experience watching her newborn daughter grow, the series donated ten percent of its proceeds to LegalAbortion.eth, a wallet created by UnicornDAO to fund reproductive rights.
In September 2024 she exhibited Nostalgia in “Patterns of Flow”, a group show on Feral File curated by Yusuke Shono and Alex Estorick that placed ten contemporary Japanese generative artists in dialogue with Hiroshi Kawano's early computer art experiments.,The 65-piece series renders pixelated noise through WebGL, with each pixel's color independently calculated to produce flowing gradients reminiscent of natural skyscapes. Its flowing blue gradients evoke Kawano's 1962 essay on aesthetic information, in which he argued that art moves toward what he called eternal stability embraced by nature.
