Bio

Mike Almond is a programmer who turned to digital art, drawn to glitches, generative systems and technological misuse. He makes his work with a continually evolving suite of image-generation and manipulation tools, working to please his own aesthetic and often poetic sense. His interest in glitches began in the late 1990s, when a corrupted JPEG on an Amiga first drew him into experimenting with image compression and digital decay.

In 2016 he built 31,622,401 seconds, a data visualization that logged a year of Twitter activity to measure the rate of posts made and deleted across the network. That same year he made Meanderer, a tool that randomly browses websites to obscure a user's activity from bulk data collection under the UK's Investigatory Powers Bill. His NFT Cloud Call depicts two friends catching up over a video call, backed by calming music.

Alongside his digital practice, Almond has taken up physical making, restoring a battered British Rail lamp into a working light fixture and building copper-and-wood shelving.^,
